1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit of the Timing Cover in the Diesel on 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E?
A: Starting to remove the components, disconnect battery negative lead first and put up the bonnet as far as possible. Take away the engine undershield, radiator and driving assembly of the cooling fan and then take away the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper and hub. Then loosen the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner by pulling off the plastic cover, unscrewing the securing bolt, and removing the idler pulley, cooling fan pulley, and tensioner damper strut and any spacers and brackets. Disconnect the tension spring, disengage the tensioner, debride away the brake vacuum pump, then the power steering/self-leveling suspension pump and (where equipped) the self-leveling suspension hydraulic pump. Take off the alternator, drain the engine oil, strip the camshaft cover. In models which have air conditioning, cover the condenser to avoid damage. while being careful to record bolt locations, unscrew the fuelfilter/thermostat assemblies bolts, unbolt engine oil level dipstick tube and alternator mounting bracket. Indicate the position of crankshaft sensor mounting bracket, loosen it, and position it aside. Where applicable, remove engine movement stop and disconnect engine mounting damper to crossmember. Loosen the bolts that hold the engine lifting bracket to the front and screw out the lower engine mounting bolts then pick up the engine to expose sump-to-timing chain cover bolts. Take out these bolts and widen the other sump bolts and then reposition the engine on the engine mounts. Unscrew the mounting bolts of the fuel injection pump and the bolts connecting the cylinder head with the timing chain cover; then gradually loosen the rest of the timing chain cover bolts, and then very carefully lift off the cover while avoiding tears in the gaskets. To refit, clean up the mating faces of the timing chain cover, cylinder block and cylinder head, inspect the state of the gaskets and replace them in case of damage. Re-assemble the crank shaft oil seal; prise out the old crank shaft oil seal, clean the seating face, and prise in the new crank shaft oil seal. Wipe the mating face of the cylinder block with sealant, apply a coat of clean engine oil on the lips of the oil seal and slide the cover into place, without inflicting a ding or nick. Reseat and tighten bolts connecting timing chain cover-to-cylinder block and cylinder head-to-timing chain cover. Take the crankshaft tape off, re-fit the fuel injection pump mounting bolts and then ensure the engine is lifted to re-fit the sump-to-timing chain cover bolts, as the sump bolts are tightened in a progressively increasing manner. Place the lower engine onto the mount and reconnect the lower engine mounting bolts, the engine mounting damper bolts, and engine movement stop (where necessary). Install the crankshaft position sensor fitting bracket, alternator fitting bracket, dipstick, fuel filter/thermostat assembly bolts and remove shield (where applicable) of the air conditioning condenser. Lastly, refit the camshaft cover, alternator, self-leveling suspension hydraulic pump, power steering/self-leveling suspension pump, brake vacuum pump, auxiliary drivebelt tensioner, crankshaft pulley/vibration damper and hub, cooling fan drive assembly, radiator, engine undershield, re-fill the engine with oil, reconnect battery negative lead and lower the bonnet.
