Remove the alternator and place it on a clean work surface with the pulley facing down. For models with a compact alternator, remove the retaining screws, then prise open the clips and lift the plastic cover from the rear. Slacken and withdraw the brush holder/voltage regulator module screws, then lift the module away from the alternator. Measure the free length of the brushes from the manufacturer's emblem etched on the side to the shallowest part of the curved end face, checking the measurement against the specifications; renew the module if the brushes are worn below the minimum limit. Inspect the surfaces of the slip rings at the end of the alternator shaft for excessive wear, burning, or pitting, which may necessitate renewal. Reassemble the alternator by reversing the dismantling procedure and, upon completion, refit the alternator.
