Mercedes-Benz 190E Valve Lifter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the general information and procedure for removing, dismantling, inspecting, reassembling, and refitting the camshaft and valve lifter in the Four-cylinder petrol engine on Mercedes-Benz 190E?
    A:
The camshaft bearing caps have rocker gear embedded in them, and the rocker arms are fitted on separate short rocker shafts that insert into the caps. One bearing cap consists of one exhaust and one inlet rocker arm, and the drillings-to-hydraulic valve lifters are fixed to the rocker arms. When starting removal, air cleaner assembly and camshaft cover should first be removed and after that the camshaft sprocket. In models whose valve clearances are manually adjustable, the locknuts need to be loosened, and rocker arm adjuster screws unscrewed. The rocker arms and bearing caps should be examined and an identification mark pigmented upon them, where a mark may be missing. The cap bolts on the camshaft bearing should be smoothly unscrewed in a diagonal pattern, then the oil spray pipe and camshaft bearing cap/rocker assemblies are removed, taking care not to force out stuck ones. In those hydraulic lifters, the camshaft has to be raised out of the cylinder head, with the pads of the valve lifters removed one after another. These camshaft bearings and lobes must be inspected too, and when needed, the camshaft and rocker arms also must be replaced at the same time. The rocker arms are taken off by straightening the short rocker shafts, them drawing a mark so that it may be replaced in its former position. He prefers the tool used by the manufacturer to remove rocker shafts, however an alternative is a long bolt. Adjusters and rocker arm wear must be inspected and parts washed prior to repositioning. Before reassembly, the contact surfaces should be lubricated bearing in mind that all parts must be restored in their correct position and with the right orientation. A mandrel should be used to remove valve lifters and spacer washers must be kept tidy. Wear on the valve lifters and washers must be checked and if excessive wear is detected, spacer washers of varying thickness might be needed. Refitting valve lifters must be filled with engine oil prior to replacement, and the spacer washer correctly installed. It is necessary to lubricate the camshaft, make certain that timing marks are correctly aligned and to refit valve lifter contact pads and bearing caps back in place. Aligning of oil spray pipe with oil holes and tightening of bearing cap bolts should be done on progressive basis. Check camshaft timing mark, re-install camshaft sprocket, cover, and air cleaner assembly and set valve clearances.
