Mercedes-Benz C240 Alternator

Mercedes-Benz C240 Alternator keeps the battery of the sedan charged and all the lights, sensors, and infotainment circuits active whenever it is running. Within each Mercedes-Benz unit, there are two cast aluminum shells that offer protection to a rotor and fixed stator windings. The power flows out of one of the belts attached to the crankshaft to the Alternator pulley and to the rotor within those windings. This movement generates alternating current which is immediately transformed into direct current using the built-in diodes and is relayed to the battery and into the rest of the electrical system in the vehicle. A regulating circuit can be applied to increase or decrease the current in the rotor field to maintain the voltage within the optimum range as the load on the generator reduces idling or rises under high revs. In earlier models it employed a standalone or in-unit regulator, and later model years delegate the task to the powertrain control module, a change that is also representative of larger-scale Mercedes-Benz electrical policy. Cooling fins on the front fan direct air over heat sinks protecting the rectifier, preserving component life in spite of temperatures in the engine bay regardless of the year. Previous cars applied external regulators, whereas newer units have the hardware built into the housing, making the newer design much smaller and easily replaceable as a unit. The owners of second generation C240 will only experience the integrated style. Throughout the years, the Alternator has been the core of the electrical system and a consistent transformer of mechanical rotation into consistent electricity in all Mercedes-Benz cars on the road.

Mercedes-Benz C240 Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the alternator on Mercedes-Benz C240?
    A:
Remember to take the old alternator when installing the new one to make sure that the new or repaired version looks like it, has the same terminals, and the same identification numbers. Most new and remanufactured alternators do not include a pulley so inquire about the policy of the shop concerning the transfer of the pulley, some will provide this free. In the case of 2001-2005 V6s, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the engine cover and air filter housing, unscrew the accessory drive belt, unscrew the alternator without disconnecting the electrical connector and battery cable. On V6's (as of 2006) and later, proceed accordingly, such as have the car raised, the air intake duct removed, various components disconnected then open up the design of the alternator by unscrewing the various printed plates and attaching a nut to the screwdriver. The location of the alternator is noted as being on the lower right side of the engine block, and on 2002 four-cylinders; the negative battery cable must be disconnected, the vehicle raised, and the engine under-cover and drive belt unbolstered before the alternator can be removed. With 2003-2005 four-cylinder models, again disconnect battery, then intake duct then detach alternator by unbolstering. All models are the reverse of installation, that is removal.
