ESP components are used to operate a brake light in 2002 and newer model vehicles which do not include a brake light switch. Access can be achieved by removing the lower instrument panel insulator underneath the knee bolster of the driver. Then find the brake light switch which is very likely just above the top of the brake pedal arm or on the external cover which covers the pedal arm. Press and hold the brake, then press the little release tab on the switch that communicates with the mounting bracket, and twist the switch off. Unscrew the electrical connector, and, prior to connection with the new switch, draw the plunger completely out to clear it. Then press the brake pedal to the floor and connect the switch back into the bracket where you had removed it. Now release the brake pedal and pull it softly back to make sure that it is actually totally released and then reassert the electrical connector and make sure that the brake lights are working properly.
