Mercedes-Benz C240 Differential Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to assemble the rear and front differentials on Mercedes-Benz C240?
    A:
So to assemble the rear differential, you should first re-raise the rear of the car and firmly hold it using jackstands, keeping the transaxle in Neutral with the parking brake off and the front wheels obstructed to keep it still. Drain the differential lubricant, and take off the driveaxles. Use a mark to locate how the Driveshaft connects to the pinion flange and then unbolt and finally suspend the driveshaft using a piece of wire without reinforcing the center support bearing. Prop a floor jack under the differential, unscrew all mounting bolts and gradually remove the jack to lift the differential out beneath the car. To install, simply repeat the opposite procedure of removal, making sure that all fittings are tightened to the recommended torque value and ensuring that you put in the correct lubricant in the differential. With AWD models, you can start with the removal of the right side intake air duct, along with the fasteners holding the upper half of the exhaust shielding plate. Lift the front of the car and put jackstands beneath the frame not below the suspension components. Take off the front wheels, driveaxles, intermediate shaft, and then the front driveshaft. Unplug the steering gear return line at the bottom of the differential and remove the front stabilizer bar pivot point off the link rods. Destroy the fasteners that hold the heat shield on the steering gear above the right boot, and then a mounting at the base of the differential. Take away steering gear retaining plate and partially withdraw steering gear. Truss the back section of the subframe with a transmission jack and tie-down using ratchet type straps and have an extra floor jack underneath the rear part of the subframe central rather than underneath the front before lowering. Disassemble the differential lower mount to remove its fasteners that hold the differential to the subframe and take the differential out. To make installation, preferably the reverse of the removal operation, be performed taking precaution not to overlook any of the fasteners, which must always be maintain all tied with the recommended load, and the lubricant commissioned into the differential of lubricant.
