Mercedes-Benz C240 Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the harmonic balancer in the Four-cylinder engines on Mercedes-Benz C240?
    A:
Get the cable off of the negative terminal of the battery. Take off the engine lower splash shield. Unscrew the drivebelt and make the belt tensioner not be anywhere near the harmonic balancer. Separate the air intake duct of the supercharger. Unscrew the harmonic balancer center bolt, taking care of a safe system to prevent the turning of the crankshaft (e.g. by removing the starter and stuffing a tool into the teeth of the ring gear during its removal) and another assistant removes the balancer bolt. Note the sequence and location of the dished washers down below the center bolt. Essentially, a damper is pulled off the crankshaft by using a two-jaw puller which has the jaws facing outward and which clamps them firmly inside the holes of the damper. Look at the balancer hub surface: if there are grooves present, then a new balancer will be required. Make sure that the Woodruff key is properly started in its groove on the front of the crankshaft, open up that machined balancer hub with some clean engine oil and screw the harmonic balancer into place again. Go through the steps of laying a film of clean engine oil across the threads of the harmonic balancer bolt, alongside the washers before fitting the retaining bolt and tightening the required amount as per the specification, as this would be very useful in the process. Installation can be completed with a reversal of the steps during installation.
