Mercedes-Benz C320 Alternator

Mercedes-Benz C320 Alternator helps keep the car alive by converting engine movement into consistent electrical energy for the battery and all other onboard devices. In every Mercedes-Benz sedan the Alternator is housed in two interlocked aluminum shells and it is mounted at the front of the engine, enclosing a stationary stator and a rotor mounted on a shaft which includes a pulley and a small cooling fan. The crankshaft is connected to a belt that rotates the rotor within the stator windings and creates an alternating current that is transformed by the built-in diodes into direct current to recharge the battery rapidly and to perform continuous lighting, audio and climate control functions. Within the rear housing, slip rings carry current to the brushes, and the rectifier and a voltage regulator monitor output in order to ensure that the battery does not starve or cook. Earlier C320 versions had a dedicated regulator, either bolted nearby or fitted within the unit, however, later models transfer field current supervision to the powertrain control module, electronically cutting field current to allow finer control. In addition to that evolution, the construction of the core has remained the same, with bearings in the front and the back to stabilize the spinning shaft and heat sinks to protect the diodes. At a red light or on the highway, a Mercedes-Benz depends on this small powerhouse to convert mechanical spin into reliable electricity, and the current-day electronics on a Mercedes-Benz take advantage of a healthy Alternator to drive without worry.

Mercedes-Benz C320 Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the alternator on Mercedes-Benz C320?
    A:
Remember to take the old alternator when installing the new one to make sure that the new or repaired version looks like it, has the same terminals, and the same identification numbers. Most new and remanufactured alternators do not include a pulley so inquire about the policy of the shop concerning the transfer of the pulley, some will provide this free. In the case of 2001-2005 V6s, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the engine cover and air filter housing, unscrew the accessory drive belt, unscrew the alternator without disconnecting the electrical connector and battery cable. On V6's (as of 2006) and later, proceed accordingly, such as have the car raised, the air intake duct removed, various components disconnected then open up the design of the alternator by unscrewing the various printed plates and attaching a nut to the screwdriver. The location of the alternator is noted as being on the lower right side of the engine block, and on 2002 four-cylinders; the negative battery cable must be disconnected, the vehicle raised, and the engine under-cover and drive belt unbolstered before the alternator can be removed. With 2003-2005 four-cylinder models, again disconnect battery, then intake duct then detach alternator by unbolstering. All models are the reverse of installation, that is removal.
