In order to disassemble a 2001 to 2005-model engine, the removal of the camshaft must begin by first removing the spark plugs and valve covers, and in dual-plug engines only one spark plug is required to be removed. Adjust the engine to TDC compression with cylinder number one and turn this engine until the 40-degrees after TDC mark matches with the pointer. The next step is to take out the alternator and the timing chain tensioner on the right hand side of the block, then disconnect and take out the camshaft position sensor. Use plastic cable-ties to secure the timing chain to the camshaft sprocket, use an open-end wrench to hold the camshaft and remove the sprocket bolt and sprocket. Unscrew the camshaft bearing cap-bridge/rocker assembly mounting bolts, in the reverse order of tightening and then screw out the assembly and then have a close look at the camshaft, pulling it straight up out of the bearing saddles. In 2006 and subsequent model engines, proceed using the same basic steps, which are the removal of the spark plugs and the valve covers, positioning the engine to TDC, and unbolting the air pump shut-off valves without removing the air hose. Take off vacuum pump (when fitted), strip electrical connectors at the camshaft position sensors and take off the sensors. Carefully remove the front cover so that the camshaft adjusters/sprockets come into place. Install an 3 mm punch on the alignment hole of the exhaust camshaft adjuster/sprocket, loosen the center valve nut of each camshaft, and install the timing chain upon bonding the removal of the exhaust camshaft. Once the camshaft has been removed, clean and inspect the bearing journals to see how far they are worn and damaged, measure the lobe height of each cam lobe, and see whether discoloured or even more worn. In case the camshaft is in sound shape, lubricate the journals and cam lobes of the bearings with installation lube, fit new pulse wheels on the sprockets on the 2006 and later models, and snug the center valve nuts with the camshaft in hand. Lastly, install the product by restoring the uninstallation processes.
