Mercedes-Benz 190E Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the inner and outer Tie Rod End on Mercedes-Benz 190E?
    A:
A new balljoint nut will be required on refitting. To remove the inner balljoint, firmly apply the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands. Clean the inner end of the track rod, slacken the balljoint clamp bolt, make a mark on the track rod, and measure the distance from the mark to the centre of the balljoint, noting this measurement for wheel alignment. Slacken and remove the balljoint nut, freeing the balljoint from the intermediate/drop arm if applicable, and use a universal balljoint separator if necessary. Count the exact number of turns to unscrew the balljoint from the track rod end, then clean the balljoint and threads, renewing it if movement is sloppy, too stiff, excessively worn, or damaged. For refitting, screw the balljoint into the track rod by the noted number of turns, ensuring it is positioned correctly. Refit the balljoint shank to the intermediate/drop arm, fit a new retaining nut, and tighten it to the specified torque. Tighten the balljoint clamp bolt to the specified torque, lower the vehicle, and check and adjust the front wheel toe setting if necessary. For the outer balljoint, apply the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands before removing the relevant front roadwheel. Clean the end of the track rod, slacken the balljoint lock nut and clamping sleeve, mark the track rod, and measure the distance to the centre of the balljoint, noting this for alignment. Slacken and remove the balljoint nut, freeing it from the Steering Knuckle, and use a universal balljoint separator if needed. Count the turns to unscrew the balljoint from the track rod end, clean the balljoint and threads, and renew it if necessary. If needed, transfer the locknut onto the new track rod balljoint, screw it into the track rod by the noted number of turns, and ensure proper positioning. Refit the balljoint shank to the steering knuckle, fit a new retaining nut, and tighten it to the specified torque. Refit the roadwheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the roadwheel bolts to the specified torque. Finally, check and adjust the front wheel toe setting, tighten the balljoint clamping sleeve to the specified torque, and securely tighten the locknut.
