Mercedes-Benz 300TD Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the axle shaft from a rear differential on Mercedes-Benz 300TD?
    A:
Lift up the vehicle and place it firmly on jack stands and remove them. Pour off the differential and fit and screw on the drain plug. Disassemble the brake caliper but does not disconnect the hydraulic hose, but just leave it extended on one side through a chord of wire. Attach two wheel bolts, and keep the hub from turning when unscrewing the axle shaft bolt with the help of a big screwdriver (or some other tool). Slowly pound the axleshaft in with brass drift and hammer to unbolt it at the rear hub. With the vehicle lower, loosen the axleshaft sufficiently to engage the splines out of the hub, perhaps using a jack to lift the body of the differential/final drive unit away a little. Clean the last drive rear assembly and components, unbolt and remove rear cover and wrap up the differential/final drive unit with a jack when placing the bolts. Take snap-ring pliers and carefully push the circlip out of the gear on the driving side of the differential until the geared tab of the clip shows its position. Lift the axleshaft out of the differential, making note of where the spacer is located, and lift it out of the vehicle, being careful to distinguish between left- and right-hand axeshafts by the marks. Installation is the opposite of removing, being extremely careful not to compress or angle the axleshaft unduly towards damage, but being also careful not to push the circlip into any kind of undue notch. Wipe down cover and housing mating surfaces, apply a bead of RTV-type sealant whenever around cover gasket surface, replace the cover, tighten all bolts according to specification. While on level ground, fill the final drive unit with oil up to the filler hole.
  • Q: What type of axle shaft and differential unit is described on Mercedes-Benz 300TD?
    A:
The differential unit is of the unsprung type, with the entire differential and final drive unit housing attached to the rear underbody and suspension crossmember. Two axleshafts transmit drive from the final drive unit to the rear wheels, which are connected to the fully independent rear suspension. The pinion of the differential and final drive unit runs in two tapered roller bearings that are preloaded using a collapsible spacer, and the differential features two planetary gears on a single shaft. The axleshafts are designed as maintenance-free ball and spider types. Overhaul of the differential and final drive unit is not included due to the special tools and techniques required.
