Once the camshaft has been taken out of the engine, wash with solvent and dry it completely, then examinations must be made of the bearing journals of the bearing camshaft, which could either be of uneven wear or pitting or exhibited signs of seizure, then the bearing camshaft bearing towers will probably have already been damaged and in extreme cases a replacement of the bearing camshaft, caps and cylinder head may have to be considered. Look at camshaft lobes to check the visible defects or heat discolouration to the lobes, and use a micrometer to measure the bearing journals to know whether it has excessive wear or is in an out-of-round condition and this would require the replacement of the camshaft is necessary. Measurement of journals and the top surface of the oil seal to check the wear level; the measurement should be compared to specifications. Check runout with the camshaft in the V-blocks. When the camshaft is installed in a complete engine, endplay may be measured on a dial indicator by pushing the camshaft to the extreme rearward, then forward. Where wear leads to failure, a dealer should be consulted on the possibility of reconditioning or replacement.
