Take off the ventilation hose and disable the vacuum connections on the camshaft cover, and the hoses to the emissions connector. Use a screw-driver to detach the throttle linkage, and a small screw-driver to detach the throttle linkage clip on the camshaft cover, using needle-nose pliers to remove throttle rod pin. Unscrew the linkage and get it out of the way and strip away the bolts to get the camshaft cover and gasket out of the engine. Test the clearance of the valve between the rocker arm and the camshaft base circle with the lobe related to the opposite arm. Turn the engine slowly by engaging a socket on the large bolt at the front of the crankshaft clockwise until the first rocker arm and the first camshaft lobe are positioned correctly in the clearance inspection, and repeat with each of the valves, front to rear as would be required in some models. Place a feeler gauge of sensible size through the gap between the camshaft and the rocker arm so that it can be removed with very little resistance, provided the clearance is proper. Unless the feeler gauge fits or is a tight fit, two wrenches are used to loosen the adjusting nut locknut, and could be holding valve spring collar in a large wrench. Since during this check the high point of the camshaft lobe should not be aligned with the rocker arm, carefully align the nut until a light drag is obtained on the feeler gauge when removed, then adjusting the nut more precisely until this light drag is attained again with maintainance of the same position of the high point of the camshaft lobe in respect to the rocker arm. To ensure that this adjusting nut does not rotate, one uses a wrench to firmly clamp the adjusting nut and another wrench to tighten the locknut properly before reinspecting the clearance to ensure that it has not shifted. Install the camshaft cover and a new gasket will the old one is either inside and will be dry or brittle, specify the mounting bolts are properly and securely attached to its defined torque. Lastly, reconnect throttle linkage and vacuum line connector, and start the engine to verify there was no leakage of oil between the o-ring of the camshaft cover and the cylinder head.
