Mercedes-Benz C230 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Is the rear crankshaft seal and housing serviced as one complete assembly on Mercedes-Benz C230?
    A:
The crankshaft seal and housing are serviced as one complete assembly, and the procedure is essentially the same as for the four-cylinder engine. For 2006 and later models with 272 engines, a 2 mm bead of RTV sealant should be applied at the cover-sealing area of the block, inside the bolt holes, and around the bolt holes for the two bolts coming up from the upper Oil Pan, while using the specified bolt torque value.
  • Q: How is the rear crankshaft seal replaced on Mercedes-Benz C230?
    A:
They all employ a single-piece crankshaft seal that is mounted in a bolt-in housing, and any replacement of the single-piece seal will necessitate the de-mounting of the transmission and driveplate. The housing and crankshaft seal are serviced as a unit, and require various special tools. Start by taking off the transmission, the oil pan and then the driveplate. Then detach bolts of the crankshaft seal housing and the housing where the seal and the retainer are changed together. Install a special guide tool to put on the new seal housing to the crankshaft. After the seal housing has been attached and the bolts fitted somewhat tighter, pour the special alignment tool to help centre the seal over the crankshaft. When clamping the seal housing together, tighten the retainer bolts of the seal housing to an acceptable working load without causing a protrusion of the seal housing around the plane of the oil pan matching face of the block to stop leakage of oil. The rest of the installation is done in reverse sequence in which it was removed.
