Mercedes-Benz C230 Voltage Regulator

The function of a Mercedes-Benz C230 Voltage Regulator is to prevent the alternator from producing too much voltage or too little voltage with a target of 13.5 to 14.5 volts. The smart alternator detects the battery voltage and electrical demand, varying the field current fed to the alternator rotor. An increase in current strengthens the magnetic field and increases the charging output, when the battery is low, or a lot of component are in operation. A decrease in current weakens the field and reduces output, once the battery is fully charged. The function of every light, control module, and electrical feature found in any C230 depends on a properly functioning Voltage Regulator within the Mercedes-Benz electrical architecture. Two broad design approaches are described. The mechanical regulators of the older designs are located outside the alternator and use coils and contact points that switch on and off about 200 times per second.
