Mercedes-Benz C240 Crankshaft Position Sensor

Mercedes-Benz C240 Crankshaft Position Sensor is a miniature electronic magnifier that informs the computer in the car precisely where the crankshaft is located and at what speed it rotates so that the spark and fuel are supplied at the correct time. The sensor reads a toothed wheel on the crank pulley, flywheel, camshaft, or the shaft itself to generate timed electric pulses which the powertrain control module uses to create ignition and fuel injection signals which also assist in coordinating variable valve timing and a smooth engine startup in Mercedes-Benz powertrains. There are four styles of sensing that Mercedes-Benz has employed throughout the years. The variants of the inductive Crankshaft Position Sensor are based on a simple coil and magnet, which generates a voltage when the metal teeth pass through it; as such, they are rugged and incapable of detecting a stationary crank. Active devices that can spot moving and stationary magnetic fields are the Hall Effect and magnetoresistive units which enhance accuracy in low-speed performance as well as in hot-start performance. Optical types take advantage of a light beam to tally edges on a disc that has been slotted, providing razor-sharp timing signals, but dirt can obstruct the beam. Every current-day sensor is airtight to oil and water as the traditional culprits of failure are heat, vibration, and corrosion. When the Crankshaft Position Sensor fails, the C240 will either crank but not start, or it will stumble, miss, and shut down after it warms up; due to a lack of a clean signal, the Mercedes-Benz engine will run blind.

Mercedes-Benz C240 Crankshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor on Mercedes-Benz C240?
    A:
When the purpose is actually V6 models, it is important to be careful because installing the new CKP sensor the old CKP sensor will have to be restarted at a STAR DIAGNOSIS unit to verify the correct engine operation. The sensor is mounted on the upper left rear part of the engine block and would be hard to reach as it has tight spaces. The front cover and engine cover/air filter housing should be removed first in the models of 2001 to 2005 that have an integral engine cover and in all models since 2006. Turn to the left aspect of the engine and reach the CKP sensor, it may be necessary to unscrew the MAF/IAT sensor and the air intake duct that has an arm-shaped form and increase the space. Unionize the electrical connector of CKP sensor using release tab and take off the sensor mounting bolt after which, remove the sensor off the engine. Installation is in the opposite order. But in four-cylinder models, the re-initialization of the new CKP sensor would not work the same way. It happens to be on the upper left rear of the engine block. Start by getting the vehicle safely lifted on jackstands and the lower engine cover removed. Take the electrical connector out of CKP sensor, and loosen the mounting bolt and sensor, and install it back as the reverse.
