Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and remove the accessory drivebelt. Due to the large amount of torque required to remove or install the harmonic balancer center bolt, the engine must be held from turning using a substantial tool, ideally one that locks into the teeth of the flywheel ring-gear. Remove the access cover in the bellhousing to install this tool on the flywheel. If the harmonic balancer has large enough holes, an alternative method is to position a large screwdriver or other tool through the harmonic balancer and against the block to prevent the crankshaft from turning while removing the harmonic balancer-to-crankshaft bolt. A chain wrench or prybar can be used to hold the harmonic balancer while loosening the harmonic balancer bolt, and assistance may be needed for this procedure. Install the harmonic balancer retaining bolt and tighten it to the specified torque, with the remaining installation steps being the reverse of removal.
