Pull to a stand and point the wheels straight in front and engage a parking brake. Position the
Steering Column so that its end is nearest the edge, and disable the easy entry/exit feature (assuming it has one) which creates a larger opening to enter/leave the car by moving the steering column and the seats. You will need to drain the steering fluid out of the reservoir and loosen the front wheel bells, as well as elevate the front portion of the vehicle so that it is resting on jackstands that support the vehicle under the frame and not on any of the suspension parts. Take engine splash shields out. Work ahead to separate the steering shaft coupler and lower steering shaft, indicate the relative position of the coupler to the input shaft in the steering gear when attached and do not drop the small plastic cap about the input shaft, or you may damage this part. Disassemble tie-rod ends of
Steering Knuckles, remove of the fasteners that attach the steering gear retaining plate, and in models with a rear-wheel drive, a small plate attached to the apex of the steering gear needs to be taken ISO top, replace by trim individual nuts 4MATIC models. Access the steering gear by pushing forward and down to reach the line fitting and retaining bolt, and supporting the line fitting with rope or equivalent then remove the line fitting, disconnect any electric connector as provided. Put a drain pan beneath the steering gear, loosen the line fitting that retains the bolt and pull the fitting off the steering gear, sealing the lines and openings to avoid leakage. Check the condition of all rubber bushings, removing damaged, torn or worn-out ones. Installation is the opposite of removal, to center the steering gear, connecting the steering shaft coupler fitting the steering shaft and lower steering shaft, tightening the steering gear mounting bolts and coupler metals to specified torque values, tightening the wheel bolts, filling the steering gear fluid to the specified level and bleeding the system, verifying that the power steering fluid level is correct, and having the front end adjusted as necessary.
