To begin, if the vehicle features a soft gearshift boot, carefully pry it up using a trim tool, then pry the surrounding panel up with the same tool, lift it, disconnect its wiring connectors, and remove it. For a manual transmission, place the shift lever in second gear, while for an automatic transmission, turn the ignition key to the on position, depress the brake pedal, and place the shifter in the rearmost position. Disconnect the cable from the battery negative terminal. Open the cup holder, remove the rubber liner and the screw from the bottom. Pry the console trim panel out with a trim stick, lifting it off the shift lever along with the cup holder. Open the ashtray housing, disengage the retaining tangs, and lift it out, disconnecting its electrical connector. Remove the trim piece from each side of the ashtray cavity, then rotate the two cam-lock fasteners counterclockwise at the upper front of the console. Open the armrest, remove the carpet from the bottom of the storage compartment, and unscrew the console bolts. Disengage the console from the studs at the upper right and left, carefully lift it over the shifter, disconnect any electrical connectors, and remove it from the vehicle. Installation follows the reverse order of removal. Finally, move the shift lever back into the Park position for automatic transmission, turn the ignition key to Off, and reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
