To remove the console cover on manual gearbox models, release the gear lever boot from the console cover and slide it up the lever, then lift the rear of the plastic center part of the console cover and slide it rearwards to remove, noting that it is secured by two tight rear tags and two front lugs. For automatic transmission models, lift the rear of the console cover using a plastic wedge in the gap between the selector position plate and the cover, then move it to the rear to disengage the front lugs and lift it off. Disconnect the wiring plugs at the console cover switches and remove the cover, then slacken the parking brake adjuster under the car to allow the lever to be pulled up nearly vertical. Remove the front ashtray and undo the two upper screws securing the ashtray housing to the facia, then withdraw the ashtray housing, disconnect the wiring and illumination bulb, and remove the housing. Take out the floor mats from both footwells, undo the retaining screws securing the facia and console edges, release the spire clip and retaining screw to remove the footrest on the driver's side, and take out the front carpets on both sides. On the passenger's side, undo the lower retaining screw and remove the front kick panel, then undo the central retaining screw and remove the console side cover carpet on both sides, noting that the driver's side cover carpet is secured by an additional spire clip. With effort, pull off the grip on the parking brake lever and slide it off, then pull the parking brake lever up and remove the lower lever lining. Undo the console retaining bolt in front of the gear lever or selector housing, remove the rear ashtray and the ashtray holder by prising up the lower holding clip, and working through the ashtray aperture, undo the console rear retaining bolt. Move both front seats towards the rear and pull the parking brake lever up as far as it will go, then lift the console at the rear and disengage it from the facia at the front, lifting it up over the parking brake lever to remove it from the car. For refitting, follow the reverse sequence of removal and adjust the parking brake upon completion.
