To disassemble the PAS for models produced before October 1984, loosen the top of the PAS pump fluid reservoir by unscrewing and removing cap, then loosen the long stud nut to the middle of the fluid reservoir by unscrewing and removing the pressure spring. Take out the filter cartridge and draw out all the PAS fluid in the reservoir with a clean syringe or poultry baster. Disassembble the unions, remove the unions of the pump side, delivery and return fluid pipes and be ready to leak so as not to contaminate the underside of the pipes. Slack the toothed adjuster bolt on the rear of the pump mounting bracket to unload the force on the drive belt, and remove the drive belt over the pump pulley. Unscrew the three bolts so as remove the pulley on the pump shaft, then unscrew the two mounting bolts on the back of the pump mounting bracket and reclaim the threaded retaining plate on the front. Take off the lock bolt on the back of a pump, salvage the locking nut and tooth-set adjuster, and then dismantle the pump itself out of the engine. To respond to refitting, reverse the steps of removal, aiming to regulate the stretch of the drive belt, when tightening the pressure spring and nut of the filter cartridge, and to be sufficiently not tight enough, fill the reservoir with the corresponding fluid, and check the level of this fluid after switching on and turning the steering wheel and locking it to the stops respectively to the left and right. In models dating forward to October 1984, the parking brake should be firmly applied, the front of the car jacked up, and it then placed on axle jack stands. Loosen the drive belt tension and remove the drive belt off the pump pulley, but be sure the screwing pivot holding the pulley is loosened. Should it be required empty the air inlet hose temporarily to have a good view of the pump and unscrew the related retaining bolts and unscrew the pulley whilst keeping note of the orientation. Wipe off the place under the pump unions, label the hydraulic pipes and hoses, loosen the union nuts, and pop the hoses off, taking precautions against the atmosphere spewing forward the fluid, and holding the container ready to receive the fluid. As necessary, remove the support bracket off the back of the pump, loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts, and remove them to remove the pump assembly out of the engine compartment. In case the pump is defective, contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer and obtain spare parts or an overhaul or an exchange option. To refit, loosely fit the mounting bolts to the required torque, reconnect hose with the marks made during the removal process, refit pulley to the required position, attach the drive belt and tension it, and lastly refill pump and bleed hydraulic system.

How to remove and install the power steering pump on Mercedes-Benz C230?

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. On V6 engine models, remove the left air intake duct. Remove the drivebelt by rotating the auto-tensioner counterclockwise and locking it into position; it is not necessary to lock the auto-tensioner on four-cylinder engine models. Using a large syringe or suction gun, extract as much fluid as possible from the power fluid reservoir. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump, detach the pressure line fitting and the supply hose at the reservoir, and plug the openings to prevent excessive fluid loss and contamination. For V6 engine models from 2006 and later, use a long hooked tool to pull the circlip from the fitting on the rear of the reservoir, ensuring to attach a magnetic pick-up tool to prevent losing the clip. Remove the three mounting bolts for the reservoir and take it off the pump, discarding the seal. Disconnect the electrical connector from the pump next to the pipe for the reservoir, remove the air conditioning compressor, detach the ground cable from the back of the pump, and remove the mounting bolt near the bottom. Remove the two front mounting bolts from the left side of the pump and carefully take it out. For 2005 and earlier models, remove the bolt securing the reservoir to the engine bracket, detach the ground wire from the rear of the pump, and remove the mounting bolts on the front and rear of the pump, noting that the rear bolts are longer. Slide the pump and reservoir forward from the engine, avoiding any power steering fluid drips on the vehicle's paint, and remove the reservoir from the pump by taking off the circlip from the pipe fitting and discarding the seal. For four-cylinder engine models, remove the alternator wire harness from the pump's heat shield, take out the eight screws securing the heat shield to the pump, and then remove it. Remove the mounting bolts located on the front and rear of the pump, and carefully take out the pump. The pulley can be removed from the pump if necessary, with special tools available at most auto parts stores. Installation is the reverse of removal; ensure to tighten the mounting bolts and pressure line fitting to the specified torque values, use a new hose clamp on the supply hose at the reservoir, and a new seal when installing the reservoir onto the pump. Use new sealing washers on the pressure line fitting, fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid, and bleed the system, then re-check the power steering fluid level.
