1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E Control Arm Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit rear suspension control arms on 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E?
A: New pivot bolt nuts will be required on refitting, and a new balljoint nut will also be necessary for the lower rear control arm. If multiple control arms are being removed simultaneously, support the lower arm with a jack and a block of wood. Begin by chocking the front wheels, jacking up the rear of the vehicle, and supporting it on axle stands before removing the relevant roadwheel. For the upper camber control arm, slacken and remove the nut, then withdraw the pivot bolt securing the arm to the hub carrier. Next, remove the nut and pivot bolt securing the control arm to the subframe, and take the arm out of the vehicle, tapping out the locating sleeve from the control arm hub carrier bush if needed. Inspect the control arm for damage, particularly the rubber bushes, and renew if necessary, along with the pivot bolts if they show wear. The upper torque control arm is removed in the same manner, excluding the locating sleeve remark. The lower thrust control arm follows the same removal steps. For the lower track control arm, make alignment marks between the arm inner pivot bolt, eccentric washers, and the subframe before removal to maintain the rear wheel toe setting. Remove the nut and eccentric washer, then withdraw the pivot bolt securing the arm to the subframe. Unscrew the nut from the balljoint shank, free the balljoint from the hub carrier, and remove the arm. Inspect the control mounting bush for damage and ensure the balljoint moves freely with an undamaged gaiter, renewing the control arm if necessary. For refitting the upper camber control arm, tap the locating sleeve back into position if needed, locate the arm, insert the pivot bolts, and fit new nuts, tightening them lightly. Refit the rear roadwheel, lower the vehicle to the ground, and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque. With the vehicle on its wheels, rock it to settle the control arm, then tighten both pivot bolt nuts to the specified torque setting. The upper torque control arm is refitted in the same manner. The lower thrust control arm is also refitted similarly. For the lower track control arm, maneuver it into position, insert the inner pivot bolt, eccentric washer, and fit the new retaining nut, aligning the marks made prior to removal and lightly tightening the nut. Fit the new retaining nut to the balljoint shank and tighten it to the specified torque. Refit the rear roadwheel, lower the vehicle to the ground, and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque. With the vehicle on its wheels, rock it to settle the control arm, check that the marks on the subframe, pivot bolt, and eccentric washer are aligned, and then tighten the pivot bolt nut to the specified torque. It is recommended that the rear wheel toe setting alignment is checked at the earliest possible opportunity.
