1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E Crankshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: What factors should be considered when selecting new bearing shells for crankshaft applications on 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E?
A: In order to achieve the thickness of the new bearing shells in four-cylinder petrol engines, the measure of the bearing diameter, crankshaft journal diameter, and bearing running clearance are required followed by calculation of applied demanded thickness. Provided upper and lower bearing shells of different thicknesses are required, it is always good practice to fit the bearing cap to the thicker shell. When the engine is a six-cylinder petrol engine, we follow the same procedure as we did during the four-cylinder engine reconditioning but inquire of a dealer or an engine reconditioning planning specialist of Mercedes-Benz on the same. Colour-coded diesel engine bearing shells are in blue, yellow and red, marked on the crankshaft and cylinder block to show the thickness required. Main bearing running clearance tests should always be done with fresh bearing shells which should be clean and correctly fitted. Internal micrometers or Plastigauge can give a more accurate reading of the clearance. Measure and compare to the requirements, and determine as needed the grade of bearing shells required. When installing new main bearing caps, replace old caps as well and make sure enough of the bearing shells is lubricated. Install thrustwasher halves according to specifications and tighten main bearing cap bolts to designated torque, ensuring that crankshaft turns freely after so doing. Lastly, refit the engine parts as per the engine type, all the parts must be properly fixed and barred down.
