1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E Crankshaft Seal Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front and rear crankshaft seals in the Diesel engine on 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E?
A: To install the crankshaft front oil seal begin by detaching the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper and hub then record the installed oil seal depth. Desiccate the housing by removing the oil seal either with a hooked instrument or by drilling a small hole on the oil seal and using a self-tapping screw with pliers to remove it. Wipe down the oil seal housing, pour the new oil seal into some clean engine oil and stuff it into the housing (open end first) to the specified depth with a proper tube or socket, taking care not to exceed the border of the oil seal with plastic or tape. Where applicable; ensure to remove the plastic or stickers and refit crankshaft pulley/vibration damper and hub. To tap out the seal, remove the flywheel/ driveplate and (as required) unbolt the housing, at the back of the cylinder block. When removing the sump bolts be careful that you do not make a hole on the sump gasket. Check the surface of the oil seal contacts on the crankshaft; the excessive wear of the crankshaft should be replaced. Wipe with clean engine oil the seal housing, the crankshaft flange contacting surface and apply new oil seal by dipping in clean engine oil and pressing into place (open end first) in the housing at the observed depth ensuring that it is oriented at right angles to the flange of the crankshaft to avoid causing any squeeze between the seals. Should the housing be removed, apply sealant, to the face of the cylinder block mating face then refit, then screw in the securing bolts using the correct torque. And lastly, ensure that there are no plastic or tape covers on the crankshaft and re stick the flywheel/driveplate.
