1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E Cylinder Head Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the cylinder head in the Diesel engine on 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E?
A: The removal of the cylinder head requires a slide hammer and an adaptor in addition to a suitable hoist and other lifting tackle, and should not be attempted unless the engine is cold, and must also include the exhaust manifold. The first thing is to find the battery negative connection, disconnect the negative connection and empty the engine oil and coolant, then lift up the bonnet. Next do the camshaft, fuel injectors, radiator and auxiliary drivebelt tensioner installation/removal cleaning up any spacers or brackets. Non-Turbo models have the air cleaner cover and filter removed and Turbo models have the removal of the turbocharger inlet air hose and supporting bracket. Disbride the fuel lines at the fuel filter, unbolt the fuel filter (and dipstick tube, where there is one), and disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation hose where necessary. Loose the lugs that connect you to the exhaust mounting bracket, loose the lugs connecting you to the exhaust front if they are connected, and drain out the locking clip of the coolant elbow connection. Take out the inlet manifold and upper timing chain guide and the wiring connector bar and connectors to the glow plugs. Each time a cylinder head bolt is removed, ensure that you check all the hoses and wires are unconnected before systematically loosening all the bolts and removing them, noting their positions. Move the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold off the block with a hoist, and retrieve the cylinder head gasket. Wipe out the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block, remove all waste in the oil and water channels and verify nothing is damaged or warped. Wipe the bolt holes and check the condition of the threads, measure cylinder head bolts, whether it should be replaced or not. To refit, where required, reattaching the exhaust basin, verifying time mark alignment, gasket fitting and settling the cylinder head onto the body block. Prepared the threads and contact faces of the cylinder head bolts, fit and screw in in a prescribed sequence and phases. Install the upper timing chain guide, inlet manifold and reconnect the glow plug wires. give a fresh O-ring to the coolant elbow and reconnect exhaust front portion and install the exhaust-to-transmission mounting bracket. Finish by re-removing all steps that were used and also by making sure it is well re-connected to the fuel lines, the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner must be installed back into the engine, the radiator, fuel injectors must be installed properly, the camshaft must also be in place then the cooling system and engine oil must be refilled.
