Mercedes-Benz 190E Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps should be followed to fit new valve stem oil seals and reinstall the cylinder head on Mercedes-Benz 190E?
    A:
New seals on stems of valve oils should be installed, and to perform such operations a valve spring compressor tool will be needed. For petrol engines with four cylinders lubricate the stems of the valves and fit them into their respective positions with new ones to fit where they are ground. Install the spring seat again, and run the newly installed spring valve stem seal in fresh engine oil. When supplied with protective sleeves, push them over the ends of valve stems at the top of the rebates, otherwise apply a small piece of thick tape as protection. Cautiously find the seal on the top of the valve and on the guide with a proper socket or tube pressing it solidly against the guide. Then, put valve spring on the top of the seat cover and add spring cap again. Install the compressor tool fit the valve spring and find the split collets in the bearing of the valve stem and repeat for each leftover valve. When the valves are all in place use blocks of wood to support the cylinder head and lightly tap the end of each stem of the valves to even out the parts. Re-install the thermostat enclosure and spark plugs (as needed), the rocker gears, valve followers and camshaft, after that, the inlet and exhaust manifold, and at last, the cylinder head. In six-cylinder, petrol-powered, engines, continue with the refitting of the rocker gear, valve lifters, camshaft, and then the inlet and exhaust manifold, then the cylinder head. Do the same to the diesel engines and have the glow plugs, exhaust manifold and cylinder head refitted.
  • Q: How to remove the cylinder head in the Four-cylinder petrol engine on Mercedes-Benz 190E?
    A:
Refitting will also require a new cylinder head gasket and it may also need new cylinder head bolts. As a precaution before driving out the cylinder head remove the inlet manifolds and exhaust manifolds intact otherwise the cylinder head will bang against the block. Firstly, unscrew the battery negative lead, raise the bonnet and empty the cooling system. Take out the air cleaner assembly, and camshaft sprocker, timing chain upper guide rail, and auxiliary drivebelt. Disconnect cylinder head exhaust front pipes, dipstick guide lube, throttle cable and coolant hoses. Unscrew mounting strut of the inlet manifold and eliminate wiring plugs and vacuum lines, disscrew union nut of the brake servo vacuum hose. In fuel injection models, depressurise the fuel system and remove the case lines of the fuel supply and the return lines. Unbolt bracket of air conditioning pipes where applicable, loosal the control pressure cable on automatics with automatic transmission, and loosal the hose clip on the bypass hose of the coolant pump. Unplug radiator top hose, inspect around emission control system, Disconnect all the hoses, pipes, and wires involved. Loosen the bolts holding the cylinder head attached to the timing chain cover, loosen the bolts attaching the cylinder head after loosening the loop successively and take them away. Carefully rock the cylinder head out of the block (with help preferably) and replace the cylinder head gasket. The manifolds may be taken off as desired, and the mating faces of the block and cylinder head carefully cleaned. Look at the nicks and scratches and, otherwise, examine a straight-edge if warpage is suspected. Erase the bolt holes and inspect the threads, as needed, with a tap. Test the length of each bolt and decide whether the bolt should be renewed or not. When refitting, we must correctly install the new gasket, lay the cylinder head on the block, grease the threads and contact faces on the bolts, and secure them in the required sequence and sequence. Install all removed parts, reattach hoses and wiring and ensure all this is correctly reconnected. Lastly, fill the cooling system, reattach the negative lead of the battery, and engine test to make sure things are not leaking.
