New propeller shaft rear coupling nuts, driveshaft joint bolts, and final drive unit mounting bolt nuts will be required on refitting. Begin by chocking the front wheels, jacking up the rear of the vehicle, and supporting it on axle stands before removing both rear wheels. For models with ABS, drain the oil from the final drive unit and remove the wheel speed sensor from the final drive casing. Next, remove the nuts and lower the exhaust pipe heat shield away from the floorpan. Using a 41 mm open-ended spanner, slacken the propeller shaft clamping nut located just behind the centre support bearing, using a second spanner to hold the propeller shaft stationary. Undo the screws securing the propeller shaft centre support bearing to the underbody, then remove the nuts and bolts securing the propeller shaft rear flexible coupling to the differential pinion flange. Push the propeller shaft forwards to disengage the pinion flange centering sleeve, move it to the side, and support it with wire tied to the parking brake cable. Unscrew the bolts securing both driveshaft inner constant velocity joints to the differential drive flanges, then push the driveshafts outwards to clear the drive flanges and tie them up with wire to the rear suspension camber strut. Place a jack beneath the final drive housing to take its weight, then undo the bolts at the rear securing the final drive housing to the subframe and remove them along with the locking plates. Undo the nut and remove the socket-headed bolt securing the housing to the subframe at the front, lower the jack, and remove the final drive housing from under the car. For refitting, position the unit centrally within the subframe and refit the front retaining bolt and nut finger-tight. Refit the four rear retaining bolts and locking plates, tightening them to the specified torque, then tighten the front nut and bolt. Engage the propeller shaft over the pinion flange centering sleeve and secure the flexible coupling to the pinion flange with the three nuts and bolts. Refit the two centre support bearing retaining bolts, tightening them finger-tight only at this stage. With the propeller shaft in position, tighten the clamping nut and fully tighten the centre bearing retaining bolts to the specified torque. Refit the exhaust heat shield, lightly lubricate the driveshaft inner constant velocity joint-to-differential drive flange bolt threads with light oil, refit the bolts and locking plates, and tighten to the specified torque. For cars with ABS brakes, refit the rpm sender and secure it with the retaining bolt, ensuring any metallic particles on the sensor magnetic probe are removed. Unscrew the housing filler/level plug and refill or top-up the final drive oil to the level of the plug orifice using the specified lubricant, then refit and tighten the plug securely. Finally, remove the stands and lower the car to the ground.
