At specified intervals, the air filter should be cleaned or replaced with a new one, and a thorough program of preventative maintenance would include inspecting the filter between changes. The air filter is located inside the air cleaner housing on the top of the engine and is replaced by removing the ventilation hose and the nut at the top of the air cleaner assembly, releasing the clips, and lifting off the top plate. While the top plate is off, care should be taken not to drop anything into the manifold opening. The air filter element can then be lifted out of the housing, and the inside of the air cleaner housing should be wiped out with a clean rag. The filter should be struck sharply on a floor, workbench, or similar surface to dislodge dust and dirt; if excessive, it should be replaced with a new one regardless of elapsed time. When installing a new filter, it is important to compare it to the old one to ensure it is the same type and size. The filter should be placed into the air cleaner housing, ensuring it seats properly at the bottom, followed by the installation of the top plate and the ventilation hose.
