Mercedes-Benz 300TD Lift Support Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear lift support strut on Mercedes-Benz 300TD?
    A:
Disconnect the negative cable at the battery and place it out of the way to prevent accidental contact with the negative terminal, which would allow power back into the vehicle's electrical system. Open the tailgate and remove the rear compartment light without disconnecting it. Remove the retaining screws and withdraw the rear roof panel from the clips. Support the tailgate, pry out the strut retaining clip, and extract the pin from the hinge. Use an Allen wrench to remove the front mounting bolt, which is accessible through an access hole in the headliner; if there is no access hole, carefully pull the headlining away. Withdraw the strut from the vehicle toward the rear, past the hinge. For installation, insert the strut into position and secure the front retaining bolt tightly. Connect the strut to the tailgate and install the clip, then reinstall the roof panel and light.
