Mercedes-Benz 300TD Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace a water pump on Mercedes-Benz 300TD?
    A:
Always make sure that the engine has cooled down before doing this. pleted Contingent deployment Disconnecting Negative battery connection and scrubbing the cooling system. Take off the Radiator, fan, upper and lower pulleys and the engine drivebelts. Disassemble radiator and heater hoses, this step will require removing crossover pipe that is attached by two bolts to the water pump housing. Disattach the water pump bolts, and, as needed, rotate the balancer until you reach the notch letting you reach the tower bolt. Removal of the water pump and the housing assembly must be done carefully over the engine, possibly by a rocking motion. Be sure to clean all gasket material on the mounting surface of both the water pump and engine so they are smooth to avoid leakage. Apply sealant on both sides of the gasket and place it on the housing of water pump. Install the retaining bolts and place the housing in place finger-tight, then secure the bolts to the desired toughness in a criss-cross pattern until they become tight. The rest of the installation is done in the opposite of the removal order. Add 50/50 water-antifreeze, reconnect negative battery, start engine, run until normal operating temperature is attained, and look for leaks.
  • Q: What are the signs of a failing water pump and how can its operation be checked on Mercedes-Benz 300TD?
    A:
If the water pump faults, it then causes overheating and serious damage to the engine as the coolant cannot circulate. Three ways exist to test the operation of the water pump as it is mounted. In case of any defect, the pump needs to be replaced with a new pump or rebuilt one. At normal operating temperature, the hose on the upper radiator will burst if the water pump is operating well. Water pumps also have weep or vent holes and in a failure of a seal small splashes of coolant can occur through the holes. Also, bearings of water pump may malfunction so that you can hear squealing sound at the front part of engine and you can determine any wear at the shaft by pressing the water pump pulley vertically.
