1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E Timing Chain Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to inspect and renew the timing chain in the Diesel engine on 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E?
A: You can check the timing chain by starting and uncapping the camshaft cover and just picking up a socket on the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper hub bolt to enter a full view of the chain at the camshaft sprocket. In case the sprocket or chain is worn, as indicated by too much lateral play or causes noise, the chain should be changed and the chain should also be changed in case engine being overhauled. To renew make certain before beginning a portable electric grinder and a new chain with connecting link. Unscrew the negative electricity connection to the battery, the curb of the camshaft, the fuel injectors, cooling fan and shroud, and the tensioner of the timing chain. TAKE CARE: Cover camshaft and chain-opening with clean rags, but not the sprocket. Note the protruding lugs of a chain link at the sprocket at the camshaft, the grinder can be used to remove them and then the chain link plate can be pulled off forcing out the link. clean out the rags, and take care not to drop any debris in a timing chain housing. An end of the new timing chain is connected to the old one, and it will be pulled around the sprockets as the engine metal rotates clockwise. Continue lifting on the new chain to ensure it stays attached to the camshaft sprocket and lift up on the old chain so that it does not drop off the crankshaft sprocket. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise slowly but with the new chain still tense. The new chain comes out, after which, you disconnect the old chain and bring out the old chain. Connect the new chain to the camshaft sprocket, the ends to the connecting link in the rear, and hold the link plate in place by flattening the ends of the link pins, without breaking either the chain or the sprocket. Check chain link tight and without burs and metals. Install the timing chain tensioner again, rotate engine clockwise until No 1 piston reaches TDC, and ensure that the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are in place properly. When there is a slip in the timing chain by a tooth, make sure that you adjust the location of the camshaft sprocket and verify the fuel injection pump timing. Lastly, re-assemble with the cooling fan and shroud, fuel injectors, and camshaft cover, reconnect battery negative lead.
