Mercedes-Benz 190E Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the fuel pump in the Bosch CIS-E (KE-Jetronic) fuel injection system on Mercedes-Benz 190E?
    A:
The fuel pump rests on the floorpan underside beneath the rear of the vehicle but side by side with the fuel filter. Start by Pressurising The fuel system (i.e. draining) and removing the battery negative lead without leaving it against the terminal. By means of keeping the vehicle on a level surface a parking brake is applied and the front roadwheels chocked, the rear raised and placed firmly on the axle stands. Get the screws or clips out and remove the protective cover on the fuel pump, filter, and accumulator. Disconnect the electrical wiring in the fuel pump connections, labeling them; do not become confused when reconnecting. Punch open the flexible fuel supply hose to the pump and the fuel delivery hose (runs to fuel filter) with proprietary hose clamps and do not use G-clamps to prevent any internal damage. do not clamp the hose at the arm to stop its falling over: clamp on a straight length only. Accommodate the unions and detach the fuel lines on either side of the fuel pump, retrieve and eliminate sealing washers on banjo bolt unions, prepare to lose some fuel temporarily by placing a small canister underneath and stuffing the area with absorbent rags. Disassemble- loosen the screw(s), undo the retaining strap and detach the pump off the mounting bracket. Should the bracket and its shape be such that it cannot be lowered sufficiently to clear the pump, unscrew the banjo unions, unscrew the fuel pipe to the fuel accumulator and filter, once more be prepared to spill the fuel and to pick up sealing washers already. The pump can be raised up and then removed after some fuel pipe is displaced. Recalling, reverse the taking off steps (it is important that the anti-corrosion plastic sleeving remains well in place to avoid metal to metal contact between the pump and retaining strap), and new sealing washers should be used when rejoining the pumping banjo bolt unions. Once the installation process is complete, then start the engine and test all the areas around the disturbed parts to ensure that there are no leaks but the fuel pump will de-aerate the system which will make the engine to take longer time than normal to start.
