- Q: How to remove and install a starter motor on Mercedes-Benz 300TD?A:Unscrew the negative battery cable, and lift the front of the car with jack stands and keep it in place. Break the connection between the wires and the starter solenoid that may be approached through an access point located beneath the vehicle. Unscrew the starter brace bolts on both the starter and the engine block which are on the front of the starter housing. To add space to the withdrawal of the starter motor, dismantle the through-bolt, and drop the steering track-rod. Take off starter retaining bolts in the back of the bellhousing, which can be removed under the car using a suitable metric Allen head wrench. In car models using an automatic transmission, unscrew the filler tube bolt, and have an assistant shove the filler tube back about halfway to reach the upper bolt in the engine compartment. Cautiously take off the starter motor of the engine, this should have a good hold because of the small maneuvering space, and because of the weightiness of the motor. The opposite of unstopping is installation; here the steering track rod bolt must be tightened to the required torques.
