- Q: How to remove and refit the steering knuckle and associated components on Mercedes-Benz 190E?A:New shock absorber to steering knuckle lower bolts and upper bolt nut, a steering rod balljoint nut, and a lower arm balljoint clamp bolt nut will be required on refitting. Firmly apply the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands before removing the relevant front roadwheel. If the steering knuckle is to be renewed, remove the hub assembly. For refitting the steering knuckle assembly, slacken and remove the two bolts securing the brake caliper mounting bracket to the knuckle, then slide the caliper assembly off the disc, discarding the caliper bolts and using new ones on refitting. Tie the caliper to the front suspension coil spring to avoid strain on the hydraulic brake hose, and remove the wheel sensor on models with ABS. Slacken and remove the nut securing the steering rod balljoint to the steering knuckle, then release the balljoint tapered shank using a universal balljoint separator. On models equipped with ASD, if work is on the right-hand side, undo the retaining bolts and remove the wheel acceleration sensor, taking care not to drop or knock the sensitive ASD sensor. Support the lower arm while the steering knuckle is removed by positioning a jack and block of wood underneath or using a suitable spring compressor. Locate the knuckle correctly with the shock absorber, ensuring the knuckle peg is in the hole, then insert the steering knuckle upper retaining bolt and washers, fitting the new nut. Fit the two new lower bolts securing the shock absorber to the knuckle, push down on the steering knuckle axle to contact the shock absorber, hold the knuckle in position, and tighten the upper bolt nut and both lower bolts to the specified torque. Remove the jack or spring compressor and connect the steering rod balljoint to the knuckle, fitting a new nut and tightening it to the specified torque. Fit the hub assembly, remove all traces of locking compound if the hub was not disturbed, and slide the caliper into position over the disc, ensuring the pads pass either side of the disc. In rear wheel drive cars, take the hub out of the steering knuckle and in 4MATIC (AWD) cars take the driveaxle hub nut out of the axle shaft and push the axle shaft through the hub up to the point of being loose; sometimes the hub nut can be difficult to remove, in which case place the hub nut on the shaft until it meets the end and then use a mallet to work the hub nut loose, or a puller may be needed. Remove the tie-rod end at the steering knuckle and separate the strut assembly with the steering knuckle, (and in rear wheel drive models, separate the suspension struts with the steering knuckle, and 4MATIC (AWD) models, separate the lower control arm and the steering knuckle as well). Check for cracks around the steering knuckle especially around the steering arm and spindle and also check the balljoint stud holes (grocoves) are not long or cracked and replace the steering knuckle as necessary. The brake dust shield(s) can be removed and replaced, but that requires work, whereas removal is the converse of installation and a tightening of all suspension fasteners to the recommended torque should all work. Lastly, screw in the wheel bolts up to the correct torque and check the front end position and correct it accordingly.
