Other necessary tools include jackstands to support the vehicle, a drain pan capable of holding several quarts, newspapers, and clean rags. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then place the drain pan underneath the transmission pan. Remove the drain plug to allow the fluid to drain, measure the amount drained, and reinsert the plug securely. Remove the transmission pan bolts and gently pry off the pan if necessary. Clean the gasket surface of the transmission and pan to remove all traces of the old gasket and sealant, then clean the pan with solvent and dry it. Some models may have magnets in the transmission pan to catch metal debris; clean the magnet thoroughly, noting that a small amount of metal material is normal, but consult a dealer if there is considerable debris. Remove the filter from the valve body inside the transmission and install a new O-ring and filter. Ensure the gasket surface on the transmission pan is clean, install a new gasket, and put the pan in place against the transmission, tightening each bolt gradually to the specified torque. Lower the vehicle and add the same amount of automatic transmission fluid that was drained through the filler tube. With the transmission in Park and the parking brake set, run the engine at a fast idle without racing it. Move the gear selector through each range and back to Park, then let the engine idle for a few minutes. Check the fluid level, adding enough fluid to bring it to the proper mark on the dipstick, being careful not to overfill. Finally, check under the vehicle for leaks during the first few trips and check the fluid level again when the transmission is hot.
