On 4-cylinder petrol engine models start by disconnecting the negative cable of the battery, and emptying the cooling system. And take off both the cooling fan and the auxiliary belt pulley on the water pump, then the thermostat and its body in the cylinder head. Take the bypass hose out and disconnect the radiator bottom hose and heater return hose at the water pump and the auxiliary hose. In the early models, disconnect the electromagnetic coupling of the water pump spindle, but in the later models you need to unplug the wiring of the couple. Then disassemble the alternator, its mounting bracket, the various lengths of bolts holding the pump, etc. To refit, clean the engaging surfaces, but do not score them and fit fresh gaskets as all bolts are screwed to the required torque. Install the electromagnetic coupling again, tension auxiliary drivebelt(s) and recharge the cooling system. On 6-cylinder petrol engine models, the start without connecting a battery negative cable and empty the cooling system. De-mount the auxiliary drivebelt and tensioner, remove the power steering pump unscrewed, leaving the hoses connected, remove the air cleaner and the inlet scoop moulding. The water pump can have better access after taking off the distributor and auxiliary belt cover panel. When possible, relocate the air conditioning compressor, the heater return pipe and retrieve the O-ring seal. In automobiles that have an oil cooler, unscrew the cooling pipe assembly and not only retrieve the O-ring, but also put it back in. Detach the thermostat, the top hose to the radiator and the top hose to the cylinder head and manipulate out the retaining bolts, raising the water pump off the engine enough to retrieve the dowel sleeves and sealing ring. Clean up the mating surfaces during refitting and provide access to the rearmost retaining bolts through the use of a rod and a magnet. Install or replace seals, tighten all bolts to appropriate torque, tension the auxiliary drivebelt(s) and refill cooling system. On the diesel type engine models, loosen the negative battery cable and empty the cooling system. Removal of auxiliary drivebelt and tensioner (when fitted with electromagnetically coupled cooling fan), and removal of cooling fan. Unbolt the heater return pipe, clear all the hoses out of the water pump housing and salvage the O-ring seal. Take off the alternator, bracket holding the alternator, unbolt the housing containing the water pump and take that and the pump off and recycle the gasket. Lastly, wash the mating surfaces, reassemble with fresh gaskets, tighten all bolts the correct amount, reconnect the cooling fan and re-tension the auxiliary drivebelt(s) and fill the cooling system with liquid.
