Mercedes-Benz 190E Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the steps involved in the removal and refitting of the oil pan in the Four-cylinder petrol engine on Mercedes-Benz 190E?
    A:
This operation will need an appropriate hoist and lifting tackle and new oil pan gasket and new exhaust clamp nuts to fit. The first one is to switch off the battery negative lead, air cleaner assembly, engine undershield, and front anti-roll bar, and empty the engine oil. Disconnect, where possible, the wiring to oil level sensor in the oil pan, and remove the engine oil level dipstick and cap the dipstick tube. Unscrew the shroud into which the cooling fan is fitted and cover the fan blades. When dealing with an automatic transmission model, it is recommended to disconnect the transmission fluid coolers line and anticipate fluid spill and seal the open conduits to ensure no dirt enters. Removal of the exhaust front pipes- Before disconnecting the exhaust front pipes, loosen the bolts holding the engine mounting damper on the left side, any engine movement stop, and the bolts holding the exhaust mounting bracket to the transmission. Unbolt the 2 bottom engine/ transmission bolts, unhook the steering drag link, and remove the oil pan bracing plate (unless none are there). Place a hoist at the engine lifting brackets and hoist the engine upwards to the extent necessary to support the weight, then unscrew the bolts holding left- and right-hand engine mountings to the front crossmember. The engine can be carefully lifted to provide access to the oil pan securing bolts but thin card sheets or board are required to protect the engine. Take out the oil pan securing bolts in a diagonal order, recording the location of each to be replaced and loosen the oil pan under the car. To refit, remove any traces of gasket remnants on the oil pan and the cylinder block then lay the next gasket down on the oil pan, lift it in place and screw the bolts into position and use the correctly identified torque progressively. As necessary, trim the projection webs of the oil pan gasket at the flywheel end, install the engine in place, and screw tight the bottom engine mounting bolts. Disassemble the lifting tackle, replace, and reposition the engine movement stop where applicable and remount the oil pan bracing plate. Re-attach the steering drag link, re-attach lower engine-to-transmission bolts and re-attach exhaust front pipes. Check and refit exhaust mounted bracket bolts, re-fit the bracket and tighten U-bolt nuts. Reassemble the engine mounting damper bolts, (only where disassembled), reconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines and install the cooling fan shroud. Check that the wiring exits of the oil level sensor are reconnected where necessary, that the front anti-roll bar is installed, that the oil drain plug is screwed in and the engine undershield and air cleaner assembly installed. Reduce the car, empty the engine with correct oil and replace the battery negative lead. With automatic transmission models, verify that the transmission is at the correct level and refill, where appropriate.
