To remove the cylinder head has to be cold and the head is removed with the inlet and exhaust manifolds. Unplug the negative connection on the battery, pop up the bonnet and flush out the cooling system. Loosen the camshaft sprocket, screw appropriate bolt into the upper timing chain guide rail locating pin, and take out with slide hammer. Unscrew the back part of the dipstick tube technique, unbolt the support bracket of the inlet manifold and make the clip of the coolant pump hose looser. Disassemble the heater coolant return hose, remove bolt to the transmission fluid level dipstick tube, remove the fuel system by depressurisation and disconnect the fuel lines whilst observing fire precautions. Get throttle cable and pressure control cable out (where applicable), then break all the engine wiring harness connectors, and get all of the harness out of the brackets. Then disconnect the ignition control unit wiring and the diagnostic socket, and snap out the front ends of the exhaust. Ensure that the leads and hoses are disconnected and then loosen cylinder head bolts in stages and remove them. Cylinder head Lift the cylinder head off the block using a hoist and lift the cylinder head gasket back up. To check, should it be required, take the manifolds off and clean the faces of the mating part of both the cylinder head and block, taking care nothing gets into the oil and water ways. Inspect nicks and scratches, and where suspected of warping, check with a straight-edge. Wipe the bolt holes, investigate the threads and see whether they are damaged or not, a tap may be used. Measuring the cylinder head bolts will establish whether they need to be replaced or not. To refit, where necessary, fit the manifolds, check alignment of timing marks and install gasket over dowels. c Raise the cylinder head on a hoist, put it on the block, grease the threads of the bolts, and screw them in with your fingers. Install the bolts using the described sequence and steps, reassemble the front part of the exhaust, and reassemble all the vacuum hoses and all the wiring plugs. Reconnect fuel lines, the automatic transmission fluid level dipstick tube where needed, the heater coolant hose and the coolant pump hose. Re-insert inlet assembly brackets and the dipstick tube bracket, align about the timing chain guide rail, and screw the guide rail locating pin into place. Fit the camshaft sprocker again, fill the cooling system, re-connect its battery negative telefer, and leave the bonnet in the lower position.
