- Q: What are the steps involved in inspecting and renewing engine mount and transmission mountings on Mercedes-Benz 190E?A:Three engine/transmission mountings are used, one on each side of the engine and one below the back of the transmission, with necessary engine mounting covers depending upon the model used an engine movement restraint in front and an engine mounting damper on the left-hand side. On inspection, should there be a need to access the lower side of the vehicle, it is necessary to raise up the front of the vehicle with axle stands in place. Testing should be done on whether the mounting rubber is cracked, hardened or no longer attached to the metal, and broken mountings should be replaced. All mounting tips just need to be well screwed down, and wear can be evaluated by pushing against the mounting, or an assistant pushing the engine/transmission with the observer monitoring excessive free-play. The engine movement is configurable, and the state of the engine movement should be checked. To test the engine mounting damper, it must be removed and the piston stressed by making a complete and short stroke, feeling even resistance working, any resistance irregular must show need of renewal. To loosen the left and right engine mountings the vehicle front must be raised and supported again, the engine sufficiently supported and the engine undershield removed. The adjusting bolt to the engine movement stop must, where there is such bolt, be unscrewed, the bolts attaching the engine to the front crossmember examined and removed. Once the cooling fan shroud has been unclipsed a hoist can be used to lift the engine with any required heat shields being removed. At this point the engine mountings may be removed, and the engine mounting brackets may be unbolted off the cylinder block should one wish. Refitting is a process of undoing the removal process when all fixings are firmly tightened to their required torque and aligning the engine movement stop. When fitting the rear engine/transmission mounting take all the same precautions, that is, hold the transmission balanced and unscrew all the required bolts and then, as for removing the mounting. To effect the engine movement stop, the vehicle must first be raised by lifting it followed by the adjuster bolt which must be removed and the movement stop re-fitted in position. The engine mounting damper is held in place by bolts between the engine mounting bracket and the front crossmember, their removal requires the screws connecting one to the other to be unscrewed and the strut compressed to free it with a close watch to the direction the damper rubbers are facing so that they can be replaced afterwards.
- Q: How to check and replace engine mounts on Mercedes-Benz C230?A:There are three power train mounts: left and right engine mounts attached to the engine block and subframe, and a rear mount attached to the transmission and subframe. During the check, the engine must be raised slightly to remove the weight from the mounts. To do this, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the front wheels and tires. Position two jacks, one under the crankshaft pulley and the other under the transmission bellhousing, using a block of wood between the jack head and the crankshaft pulley or bellhousing, and carefully raise the engine/transmission just enough to take the weight off the mounts. The safest method is to use an engine support cradle that raises the engine from above, which can be rented at most tool rental shops. Check the mounts for any cracks, hardened rubber, or separation from the metal plates, as the rubber may sometimes split down the center. Also, check for relative movement between the mount brackets and the engine or subframe by using a large screwdriver or prybar to attempt to move the mounts; if movement is noted, lower the engine and tighten the mount fasteners. To replace the mounts, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the engine splash shield, then take out the bolts holding the engine mount to the subframe. Raise the engine until the engine mount bracket clears the subframe, then remove the bracket-to-mount bolt from above. Remove one engine mount and replace it with a new one, then replace the other front mount. Install the bolts, lower the engine, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
